DARIENZO CUP STORY

D'ARIENZO CUP is more than a competition.
It’s a celebration of the soul of tango—its rhythm, its embrace, its heartbeat.Across the world’s milongas, the name Juan Darienzo stirs passion and anticipation in every dancer’s chest.

The "King of Rhythm", Darienzo’s music was made to dance.
With its sharp beats, dynamic violin lines, and charging bandoneón, his style demands physical and emotional surrender.
To honor that, this competition uses only his music (in select divisions)—a bold challenge that redefines what tango competition can be.

Restrictions ignite creativity.
Dancers must connect, improvise, and express freely within the structure of Darienzo’s rhythm. This paradox is at the heart of tango itself—and of D'ARIENZO CUP .

As his timeless recordings fill the air, new stories are born—stories of partnership, emotion, elegance, and fire.

Whether you're competing, spectating, or simply curious, D'ARIENZO CUP is an invitation to discover tango’s deepest pulse.

Judging Criteria
  1. Judges will evaluate:
    • Steps, walking, connection with the partner, expressiveness, and dynamic variations in tango's speed,
    • The quality of improvisation and connection with the partner.
  2. Both divisions place great emphasis on the embrace, connection, and improvisation between the partners.
  3. As in a typical milonga, couples should dance counter-clockwise. It is allowed to take 1–2 steps back within the couple's space if necessary.
  4. Couples should be mindful not to disrupt the ronda (dance floor flow).
If a couple’s movement obstructs the ronda, judges may consider lowering their score.
  5. The embrace refers to the state where one partner’s body is always supported by the other’s arm. The embrace may stretch and contract with certain steps.
  6. All movements and figures should remain within the space of the embrace and should not obstruct other couples.
  7. The judging criteria will take into account techniques commonly used in milonga, such as: Bailada, Sacada al Piso, Enrosques, Ganchos, and Boleos.
Lifts, jumps, or figures where both feet leave the floor, and any other stage tango choreography are prohibited (except in the "Variación" category).

Participants' costumes are not part of the judging criteria, but dancers are encouraged to dress elegantly.
