About the D'ARIENZO CUP
Darienzo Cup: A Stage that Unleashes the Soul of Tango
Resonating rhythms, breathless sighs, touching skin—"Tango" is danced daily in milongas around the world. Among them, one name shines with special brilliance:
"Juan D'Arienzo"
Just hearing this name makes the hearts of tango lovers race. And now, a new page is about to be added to this legend.
Darienzo Cup: A Stage of Innovation
The "Darienso Cup," a competition named after Juan D'Arienzo, the king of tango rhythm. This innovative stage has become the focus of attention for tango enthusiasts.
Infinite Possibilities Born from Limitations
Its uniqueness lies in competing solely with D'Arienzo's music. This novel idea was born from a flash of inspiration by GYU, a member of the executive committee, a few years ago. He realized that limitations are the source of stimulating creativity.
In the world of tango, restrictions have historically given birth to new expressions. For example, "Milonga." Within numerous rules (códigos), unique dance styles, steps, and musicality blossomed.
The Darienso Cup follows this tradition. The constraint of using only the music of D'Arienzo, the "King of Rhythm," stimulates the dancers' creativity and provides an opportunity to explore new possibilities of expression.
D'Arienzo: A KING of Tango
Juan D'Arienzo's influence is immeasurable. His music, which dominated the tango world for over half a century, boasts over 1,000 recorded songs and more than 10 million sold copies. His overwhelming presence and charm continue to captivate many people at milongas and on YouTube.
Limitations Breed Innovation: Learning from History
Looking back at history, we can see that limitations have often been catalysts for innovative ideas. For example, in Japan's Edo period, the "Shijūhachi-cha Hyaku-nezumi" (Forty-eight Tea and Hundred Mice) was born under the restrictions of the luxury prohibition edict. The ingenuity of the common people gave birth to a beautiful culture.
The Magic of the Darienzo Cup
The stage of the Darienso Cup is truly a magical space.
Dancers challenge well-known D'Arienzo songs with unexpected interpretations. The audience exclaims, "Ah, so this is how you can dance to this song!" Hearts dance with the continuous new discoveries.
The atmosphere of the venue is also special. As D'Arienzo's music plays, both the audience and dancers immerse themselves in the world of tango. It's as if the atmosphere of an old-fashioned milonga has been recreated in modern times. The unique air that envelops the entire venue and the overflowing excitement never fail to captivate the audience.
This stage is the ultimate platform where dancers compete in the beauty and passion of tango, with the music of a legendary musician as the backdrop.
New Challenges, New Discoveries
The Darienso Cup is a place for new challenges for tango dancers. At the same time, it's an opportunity for the audience to discover new charms of tango.
"Limitations" sometimes give birth to "possibilities." The Darienso Cup is a good example of this.
We hope that not only tango lovers but also those who don't know much about tango will come and visit. You're sure to encounter a new aspect of tango. And perhaps you might even want to dance on stage next time.
Would you like to experience the charm of tango together? The Darienso Cup is waiting for you.
Categories
This year, we have broadly divided the categories and established four new categories. The competition has become one that a wide range of people can challenge.
Pair Division
The Pair Division is the main content of the Darienso Cup, with a grand prize of 100,000 yen for dancing D'Arienzo's tango, milonga, and waltz! And this year, we've added an adult division where one of the pair can be over 50 years old.
Pair
This division awards the winner with the Top Connect prize of 100,000 yen. It's the main event of the Darienso Cup. Pairs compete in three types of music - tango, waltz, and milonga - to D'Arienzo's music, showcasing passionate performances to determine the best milonguero and milonguera.
Number of pairs recruited: 30
★ Pugliese 50
A newly established division this year. One of the pair must be over 50 years old to participate. Many requests have been made to dance to the music of the maestro Osvaldo Pugliese. How well can you express Pugliese's heavy rhythm and emotion? This division will heat up the spectators as well.
Number of pairs recruited: 20
★ Golden Age 70
This division showcases real milongueros and milongueras where one of the pair is over 70 years old. They dance to three songs from the three major tango orchestras: Francisco Canaro, Carlos Di Sarli, and Anibal Troilo. They compete in elegance and skilled techniques. This division allows you to feel the essence of tango through the marriage of life and tango.
Number of pairs recruited: 10
Variación
The Variación division, which was particularly notable last year. In this division, pairs compete by dancing variaciones, which are the showpieces of tango technique. They demonstrate the best performances using the strength and skills unique to variaciones.
The music is within 60 seconds.
Number of pairs recruited: 10
Singles Division
In the Singles Division, you can challenge Jack & Jill in various categories. This year, the grand prize for J&J (Tango) has been increased to 50,000 yen! We've also established Milonga and Waltz divisions. And the highlight is the New Star division. People who have started tango within the last two years can challenge! Will future stars be born from this division? It's a category to watch.
J&J Tango
Milonga is a place of once-in-a-lifetime encounters. It's exactly Jack & Jill. Dance to D'Arienzo's tango and aim to be the champion of this unique encounter. From this year, the grand prize has been increased to 50,000 yen, promising an even more heated competition.
Number of participants: 30 leaders, 30 followers
★ J&J Milonga
An old yet new music, that's Milonga! Milonga was born from the fusion of habanera, candombe, and the music of payadora from the Pampas region of Argentina. In 1931, Sebastian Piana reconstructed this music. D'Arienzo's milonga, with its powerful rhythm, stirs our passion and heats up the dancers.
Number of participants: 20 leaders, 20 followers
★ J&J Vals
Vals where glamorous steps color the stage. Vals was established as Criollo Vals when polka and European waltz fused with Argentine rhythms. In milongas, D'Arienzo's Vals is very popular, and its beautiful melody captivates dancers. Elegant and emotional steps will charm the audience and judges.
Number of participants: 20 leaders, 20 followers
★ New Star
This is the most anticipated among the newly established divisions. This division is a place for dancers who have started tango within the last two years to compete. The music used are famous songs representing the Golden Age of tango. Future wonderful tango ambassadors will be born from here. - Like in a milonga, pairs should continue dancing counterclockwise. If necessary, it is permissible to take 1-2 steps back within the pair's space.
- Pairs should be careful not to obstruct the ronda on the dance floor. If movements that obstruct the ronda are made, judges may consider lowering the score.
- Abrazo refers to a state where one body of the pair is constantly held by the arm of the other. The abrazo may stretch or contract depending on the step.
- All movements and figures must be performed within the abrazo space of the pair and must not interfere with the dancing of other pairs.
- The judging criteria will consider techniques commonly used in milongas such as valida, sacada al piso, enrosques, ganchos, boleos. Jumps, figures where both feet leave the ground, and other stage tango choreography are prohibited. *This does not apply to the Variación division.
*Costumes are not subject to judging, but dancers should aim for elegant attire.
